The KV varsity boys soccer team matched up against two quality opponents on Saturday at the Plymouth Blueberry Festival Invitational. In the first game, Logansport won 4-0. In the second game, host Plymouth came out on top 3-2. Against Logansport, the Kougars battled hard for all 80 minutes but couldn't take advantage of four unanswered goals (two in each half) by the Berries. KV did have its share of opportunities to score (including a penalty kick) but simply could not get one past the Logansport goalkeeper. An hour after the first match concluded, the Kougars took on the host Plymouth Rockies. The hosts would take a 3-0 halftime advantage before the Kougars came back in the second half. A little over a minute into the second half, sophomore Jorge Pena hit a beautiful shot from 25 yards out that went over the Plymouth keeper's head to make it 3-1. With a little over 10 minutes remaining, a direct free kick by senior Landon Palfi found fellow senior Jake Hamstra inside the Plymouth six yard box. Hamstra's deflected shot was initially saves but Jorge Pena would follow with a shot off the rebounded save for his second goal of the match. Only down by one, KV had more corner kick and shot opportunities, but unfortunately could not find the tying goal before time expired. "We played two very good teams today." said head KV coach Jovan Jeftich. "It's never easy playing two games in one day, but my team never gave up and played until the final whistle. It's not the results we wanted, but I know down the road we will be better for playing the type of teams we played today. We'll now need to used the added rest over the Labor Day weekend and get ready for our next conference game on Wednesday." The Kougars will host the Munster Mustangs on Wednesday night. Kick off is set for a 6 p.m. start. The game will also be broadcasted online via the Regional Radio Sports Network @ rrsn.com.
