During the team huddle before the matches began, Coach DeVries discussed the importance of topspin (especially due to the slight breeze) and good footwork. He highlighted #3 singles Nathan Hanson as an example of being skilled and covering the court even during long, demanding games. His mental fortitude was also praised, as he makes sure to always throw negative thoughts to the wind. When playing stiff competition, the top things to maintain are: speed, structure, and the hunger to push yourself forward for the win. Looking around as matches began, both the Kougars and the Red Devils were focused, having great serves and rallies that often ended with very strategic placement. It was clear that everyone was getting great experience tonight. At one point, after the sun had moved behind the trees, the national anthem began playing for another sport event. Players ceased playing briefly as everyone near stopped to place hands over chests. One player's baby sibling giggled, eliciting smiles from everyone. It was a nice moment before shifting back into the competitions. As even the JV playbacks ended, #3 singles Nathan Hanson continued his match, once again having the longest match of the night. The lights sprang on as all eyes shifted over to see how it would end. The rallies were long and consistent, demanding stamina and intense focus. Past 8PM, their tie breaker came to a close with a triumphant victory for Hanson! In the end, Lowell won this conference match overall by one match, but everyone left today knowing that they played hard and knew what to hone in on next time in practice. - JV Coach Anderson
